DO WE NEED MORE ADVERTISING HOARDINGS AROUND BROCKLEY
STATION?
As part of the communities efforts to create a new public space around
Brockley station, the Brockley Commoners Group (part of the Action group),
successfully negotiated with Network Rail to have two large Advertising
Hoardings de-commissioned and removed along Coulgate Street (see [link to
relevant Brockley Common page] for what is happening to the existing walls and
phase 2 of the Common).
We were aghast therefore to see three new Hoarding going up, without any
consultation with us on platform 2. One of which is incredibly insensitively
placed to effectively block commuters appreciation of Brockley Common and to
deny light to the Prunus (Cherry) shrub we kept much of after local requests. It
seems Network Rail is able to do this without any planning permission.
The Issue
Their appearance also raises the issue of whether we want to put up with
this 'Corporate Graffiti' as one local person put it. Its bad enough having to
wait for delayed Southern Region trains on a platform with out adequate shelter,
without having another commercial message blasting into our space. Although our
Network Rail contact also feels the Hoarding on Platform 1 is insensitively
placed, it is now in active use.
The Brockley Commoners, working with Lewisham Council and local Councillors are
trying to preserve and enhance our green railway corridor. We are trying to give
local people a better connection with local nature as they go about their busy
daily lives. The Advertising Hoardings, in our opinion, fly in the face of this
effort.
