Hanging
flower baskets
You cannot miss the myriad of beautiful hanging flower baskets festooned around the local
area. We campaigned long and hard to make these a reality, and to ensure that they
continue, year after year.
Litter bins
They are positioned all around Brockley Cross and by the Station. Sturdy black cast iron
waste bins embossed with the logo 'Brockley Cross', which have been carefully painted by a
team of volunteers with fetching gold hoops.
Mural
Painted by the talented artist Louis Henry, the massive mural in Coulgate Street takes up
the whole of the flank wall of Foxberry Garage.
More trees
One of the groups first successes was to persuade the Council to plant ten ornimental
flowering fruit trees in Brockley Road.
Bollards
Dotted around the road juctions in the vicinity of Brockley Cross and designed to deter
drivers from driving onto, or parking on the pavement. So making the area safer for
pedestrians.
Planning consents
The group has had notable success in having a number of planning applications amended as
the originals would have been unsuitable for the surrounding area. The key decisions where
our presence at the various planning meetings and, our input into suitable alternative
proposals have been:
1. Bridge House - A proposal for 11 shared ownership homes on Endwell Road.
2. Harefield Road development - A mixed residential and retail proposal near to the
juntion with Brockley Road.
Unsafe pavements
The group has over recent years highlighted to the Highways department of the Council a
number of problem areas around Brockley, most of which they were already aware of but had
not been dealt with. These included a number of areas in St Asaph Road, Mantle Rd and
Endwell road up to where it meets the bottom of Drakefell.
If you know of any areas of Brockley which are unsafe or could be improved why not email
us! We are in regular contact with officers of Lewisham Council Highways Department.
Pigeon Poo
One of the issues that many people raised at the inaugural meeting of the Brockley Cross
Action Group in September 2000 was the layer of pigeon droppings through which many
residents and traders have to walk or slide, in order to get to and from Brockley Cross.
Following the meeting, the Brockley Cross Action Group pursued the problem with Lewisham
Council. After sustained pressure from the Group, work actually started on 2 June 2001.
Another success for the Brockley Cross Action Group.
Footnote: After only three years, the netting under the railway bridge is badly in need of
repair or replacement. BCAG are on the case and are currently negotiating with Lewisham
Council to find the solution. Watch this space.
