Get involved

Anyone who lives in the Conservation Area is automatically a member of the Brockley Society. Anyone who lives outside the area is automatically welcome to join in and get involved in the local community.  BrocSoc is YOU! so if you want to get something done, let us know, spread the word and we can all work together to make it happen.

The following is a list of actions and projects that various people have suggested. We welcome other suggestions, especially from anyone who would like to take the lead and get the ball rolling.

Brockley Mews

Brockley Society wants to raise awareness of the myriad mews in the conservation area: their history, their potential and their problems. This will be a fun and interesting walk, and you can complete our Mews Questionnaire by downloading it here.

Transition Towns

Recycling
Garden Waste

Lewisham Council is once again offering residents a  convenient – and free – way of disposing of garden waste at the weekend.

The four locations, open to residents from 9am to 12noon on Saturdays and Sundays, are:

Riddons Road junction with Mayeswood Road, Grove Park
Girton Road Car Park, Sydenham
Kitto Road, outside Orange Café, Telegraph Hill
Laurence House Car Park, Catford

To use the service, residents need to ensure that garden waste is presented to Council staff in plastic or reusable bags. Flowers and plants, grass clippings, hedge trimmings, leaves, and twigs and branches up to four inches in diameter will all be accepted. The Council cannot accept kitchen waste, vegetable peelings, soil, turf, stones or Japanese knotweed.

No trade waste or trailers, vans or open back vehicles will be allowed. The service is free, but residents should bring along proof of address and ID, otherwise they may be refused access to the service.

Garden waste can also be taken to the Reuse & Recycling Centre on Landmann Way, New Cross. Green garden waste bags can be purchased from any Lewisham library and arrange collection through CallPoint.

For further information, contact CallPoint on 020 8314 7171 or visit www.lewisham.gov.uk/recycling

The following can go in your green bins:

paper and card: magazines, wrapping paper, envelopes, leaflets, Christmas cards, egg and cereal boxes, sleeves off food packaging
cans and tins: please rinse them!
glass bottles and jars: again, please rinse them
plastic bottles: fizzy drinks, water, milk, detergent etc. and, you guessed it, please rinse them first.

you can recycle tetrapaks in Laurence House car park; Sainsburys in New Cross and Forest Hill; Tesco in lewisham and Grove Park bus garage.

You can now recycle your cooking oil too! Homes and businesses can take their used oil to the recycling centre on Landmann Way, off Surrey Canal Rd, SE14 5RS Sunday to Friday 8-4 and Saturday 8-12. it's actually illegal to pour oil down the drain - it seeps into the water table and is hazardous to wildlife and us.

The oil collected is used to produce green fuel. 1 Litre of oil is enough to make clean electricity for 40 cups of tea.

For more information on what can and cannot be recycled, call the Council on 0208 314 7171 or go to www.lewisham.gov.uk
