Get involved

Anyone who lives in the Conservation Area is automatically a member of the Brockley Society. Anyone who lives outside the area is automatically welcome to join in and get involved in the local community.  BrocSoc is YOU! so if you want to get something done, let us know, spread the word and we can all work together to make it happen.

The following is a list of actions and projects that various people have suggested. We welcome other suggestions, especially from anyone who would like to take the lead and get the ball rolling.

Say No! To Rail Cuts on Our Line

Southern Railways are planning to cut trains to Brockley, Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill, and Sydenham in December 2009 and again in May 2010. In December 2009 they plan to cut our direct evening service (and Sunday service) from Charing Cross, running all trains from London Bridge.

This is a well used service and provides a direct connection from the West End after 7:30pm. As this is an off-peak service we reject Southern Railway's claims that there is no capacity through London Bridge.

In May 2010 Southern Railways plan to reduce evening peak services and daytime services from London Bridge by over 30%, from 6 trains per hour to just 4 trains per hour (the same as the off-peak service). They will continue to run 6 trains per hour in the morning, meeting the demands on the line, but will not provide a similar service in the evenings, hoping that customers will switch to East London Line services or put up with serious overcrowding.

Recycling
Christmas Tree Recycling

Lewisham Council is once again this year offering a free Christmas tree recycling service. Residents can leave their Christmas trees at the following locations for collection up until the last week of January: Hilly Fields - entrance in Hilly Fields Crescent, SE4 Deptford Park - entrance in Scawen Road, SE8 Telegraph Hill - Pepys Road/Kitto Road entrance, SE14 Talbot Place - Blackheath, SE3 Mountsfield Park - entrance top of George Lane, SE13 Sydenham Wells Park - entrance Wells Park Road, SE26 Forster Memorial Park - entrance top of Whitefoot Lane, SE6 Northbrook Park - Baring Road entrance, SE12 Mayow Park - entrance in Mayow Road, SE23 Chinbrook Meadows, Amblecote Road, SE12 Manor House Gardens, Old Road entrance, SE13

The following can go in your green bins:

paper and card: magazines, wrapping paper, envelopes, leaflets, Christmas cards, egg and cereal boxes, sleeves off food packaging
cans and tins: please rinse them!
glass bottles and jars: again, please rinse them
plastic bottles: fizzy drinks, water, milk, detergent etc. and, you guessed it, please rinse them first.

you can recycle tetrapaks in Laurence House car park; Sainsburys in New Cross and Forest Hill; Tesco in lewisham and Grove Park bus garage.

You can now recycle your cooking oil too! Homes and businesses can take their used oil to the recycling centre on Landmann Way, off Surrey Canal Rd, SE14 5RS Sunday to Friday 8-4 and Saturday 8-12. it's actually illegal to pour oil down the drain - it seeps into the water table and is hazardous to wildlife and us.

The oil collected is used to produce green fuel. 1 Litre of oil is enough to make clean electricity for 40 cups of tea.

For more information on what can and cannot be recycled, call the Council on 0208 314 7171 or go to www.lewisham.gov.uk
